your privacy
protecting your information is a design principle of this site, not an option. here, in plain language, is what we collect, why, with whom, and the rights you have.
in effect August 31, 2026 · last updated August 31, 2026
the principle
Veille Électorale is an independent, non-partisan citizen project. the site is fully accessible without an account: reading platforms, comparing, and finding your riding require no registration. we apply privacy by design: no behavioural tracking, no spy pixel, no email-open measurement, no reselling or sharing of data with a third party. ever.
Data residency. our data is hosted in Québec (Beauharnois data centre). no personal data is hosted abroad, save for one transitional exception described below (the sending of email), which is being corrected.
who is responsible
a person responsible for the protection of personal information oversees compliance with this policy. for any question about your information, to exercise your rights, or to file a complaint, write to them at vieprivee@veilleelectorale.org.
the information we collect
we collect the strict minimum, and only for specific purposes.
- Visitor account (optional) — your email address, and, if you provide them, your riding, the themes you follow, and the promises you bookmark. purpose: to offer you a profile and alerts that you control.
- Newsletter (optional) — your email address, with double confirmation (double opt-in). purpose: to send you the newsletter you requested.
- Address search — the address you enter is used to find your riding, then immediately discarded: it is neither displayed, nor logged, nor kept. only the retained riding can be saved, and only if you have an account.
- Security (rate limiting) — to protect the forms against abuse, an IP address serves as a temporary key. it is not kept durably nor tied to a profile.
- Error report — the report form asks for no personal information: no name, no email, no IP address kept.
what we never do
- store your political leaning. a followed theme is an interest, not an opinion, and nothing turns one into the other.
- sell, share, or cross-reference your data with a third party.
- track you with pixels, tracking cookies, or email-open measurements.
- impose sign-in through a third-party service on you.
the compass and the blind comparison
these two decision-support tools are computed entirely in your browser. nothing is transmitted to our servers. the political positioning they may produce is ephemeral and destroyed at the end of your session; it is never saved to your profile. the result of the blind comparison is transmitted only if you explicitly choose to save it.
your consent
we collect your information with your consent, given by purpose and separately (for example, the newsletter is separate from profile alerts). you can withdraw your consent at any time, in one click, from your profile — without this withdrawing services already provided.
cookies and local storage
we use no advertising or tracking cookie, and no third-party cookie. any usage measurement there might be is aggregated, without a cookie or a persistent identifier. specifically:
veille_session(essential cookie) — created only when you sign in, to keep your session open. deleted on sign-out or on expiry.veille-theme(local storage, not a cookie) — remembers your choice of light or dark theme, in your browser only. is never transmitted.
the site is fully usable without any non-essential cookie; no advertising consent banner is needed, because we place nothing of the sort.
sign-in through a third-party service (optional)
by default, you sign in with a magic link or a password, without a third party. you may choose to sign in through Google or Facebook for your convenience; this is never the default nor imposed. if you do, that provider learns that you are signing in to this site. the magic link without a third party is always offered.
our providers (processors)
we rely on a small number of providers, solely to operate the service. each one has access only to the information needed for its task.
- OVHcloud — hosting of the site and the database. Beauharnois data centre, Québec.
- Resend — sending of transactional emails and of the newsletter. United States (transfer outside Québec). Transitional provider: we are migrating to Cakemail (below) to bring this data back to Canada.
- Cakemail — Canadian email provider established in Montréal, Québec; target destination for the sending of email and newsletter.
- Google, Facebook — only if you choose to sign in through their service (see above). United States.
- Let’s Encrypt — issuance of security certificates (TLS encryption). processes no personal information.
Transfers outside Québec. the sending of email through Resend, and sign-in through Google or Facebook if you choose it, involve a transfer of information outside Québec. these transfers are the subject of a privacy impact assessment, and we are working to bring them back to Canada (Cakemail).
retention and deletion
we keep your information as long as your account is active, then we destroy it. inactive accounts are purged automatically after 90 days of inactivity. you can delete your account at any time, self-service: deletion leads to an effective purge of your data, within an announced timeframe.
security
your information is encrypted at rest and in transit. profile data is isolated from editorial data. access to personal data is logged, and we follow a written procedure in the event of a security incident, including notice to the persons concerned and to the Commission d’accès à l’information where the law requires it.
your rights
under Loi 25, you have the right:
- to access your information and to correct it;
- to receive a full export of your profile (portability), self-service, in JSON format;
- to delete your account and your data, self-service;
- to withdraw your consent at any time;
- to request the de-indexing of information concerning you.
most of these rights are exercised directly from your profile. for the others, write to the responsible person (see above).
automated decisions
we make no automated decision concerning you, and we build no profile of you from your behaviour. the compass is computed on your device and never concludes with a voting recommendation.
a complaint?
if you feel your rights have not been respected, you can contact our responsible person, then, if needed, file a complaint with the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec (cai.gouv.qc.ca).
changes
we may update this policy to faithfully reflect what the site does. the effective date above indicates the current version; a significant change will be flagged to you.
